The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; and before honor is humility.“
Proverbs 15:33
Wisdom and humility are as important as truth and forgiveness. Wisdom is linked to the fear of the Lord where honor is linked to humility. We desire wisdom but rarely desire humility. How we view both wisdom and humility is how we will walk out our Christian life. Can we walk truthfully in the wisdom of God and have humility?
Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore, get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”
Proverbs 4:7
If wisdom is the first order of importance, then we should seek it to get understanding. However, the truth is that we just do not make time to get the understanding. It is not the first order of business in our lives to get understanding nor what it means to have humility. One needs humility to accept the ways of God, for the ways of man are not the ways of the Lord [see Isaish 55:8]. How can we live in this world without gaining insight about creation and the world to which God created. As science has unfolded in the world today, the question we must answer is what we as humans have learned from it. People and animals have suffered severe pain from the growth of science. Today, the pharmaceutical industry is a multi-billion-dollar business.
The pharmaceutical purpose is to cure and prevent diseases and to alleviate symptoms. Yet, the cost of prevention is above many peoples price range. There is no wisdom when a 15-year-old teen cannot get the insulin he or she needs to survive. There are all kinds of greed in the world such as material greed, power greed, emotional greed, and even intellectual greed. One should be aware how far one will go to obtain greed. We need the wisdom of God and not man. We need the love of God to show us the way, truth, and the life.
Jesus said, they that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick [see Matthew 9:12]. Then Jesus said “go and learn what that means, [see Matthew 9:13]. Go and learn and get understanding. What was it that the apostle Paul told the Colossians?
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”
Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom. It is the word of Christ that brings wisdom. Christ is also our physician when we are sick. We must humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God and ask for wisdom in all things that pertain to our life. We must take time to read the word and get an understanding of its meaning. Just going to church once a week is not enough. I can remember a time when one can go to church four to five times a week for instruction into the word of God. This was certainly true when an evangelist came to preach the gospel of Christ and bring a renewal to the body of Christ. We must humble ourselves to get wisdom for we are weak in the flesh and need teaching and admonishment to receive the mind of Christ. Let’s look at another verse in Proverbs.
Before destruction the heart of man is haughty, and before honor is humility.”
Proverbs 18:12
Wisdom and humility come when the heart of man is not proud, vain, or arrogant. Wisdom and humility come when we do not exalt ourselves above others. If we all have the mind of Christ, we all can gain understanding and have the humility of Christ. Those who have wisdom and humility accept the authority of God in their life. Can we receive the instructions of the Lord as is written in the Holy Bible? The following scripture is what we usually hear about humility, but we rarely read beyond verse 6.
Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for He careth for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.
1st Peter 5:6-9
Wisdom and humility are the first things we should have in our life as a Christian. We seek the wisdom of God through the Holy word. We humble ourselves to receive the word to gain the mind of Christ. Whatever we do not have we cast it upon the Lord. We must have the word of God for we have an adversary the devil who wants to devour us and make us fall short of the glory of God. We are not alone for many Christians have the same afflictions that we all go through. Our strength is in the Lord and our lives are in His hands. Let us strive to get wisdom with a humble heart.
